Satanic Samba
CD (NCJCD08)
2008

satanic samba
biography

First time I came to Sao Paulo, I had to buy me a sweater and a raincoat! And this was not my only surprise. None of Brasil’s clichés match with this crazy city. “Sampa” has no beaches, no girls in bikini, almost no palmtrees. Sao Paulo is a concrete jungle of 18 million people, this is the place where a quarter of Brazil’s richness is produced, a city that never sleeps, where people work and struggle to survive.

All of this is reflected in the music this “New York of the Tropics” produces. Not the smooth Bossa Nova from Rio, not the Mangue Beat from Recife, but thoroughly urban and modern underground music. It was in Sao Paulo that ground breaking Tropicalia was born in 1968, followed by the Nao Wave of the seventies and eighties.

Sao Paulo was also home to some of the best Drum’n Bass in the world. Today it is the cradle of Brazil’s militant Hip Hop (“rap nacional”), of experiment and post-rock. They all have two things in common : always a bit psychedelic and, indeed, satanic.

It is no surprise therefore that young hipsters like CSS come from Sao Paulo. Nor can it be a surprise that Bonde do Rolê’s crazy metal Baile Funk had to pass through Sao Paulo before making its way to underground dance clubs all over the world.
This crazy satanic musical universe is reflected through this compilation. Most of it was unreleased in Europe.

We are proud that Tom Zé, the little great man of brazilian alternative music, granted us a track from his recent record : an experimental masterpiece he produced turning 70! Tom Zé, who is also co-author of a psychedelic track by legendary Os Mutantes.

Discover Cidadao Instigado, the band of Brazil’s master rock guitar god : Fernando Catau. And what to say of Vurla and Lulina, two acts from underground label Peligro/Open Field Church, so very much underground that even in Sao Paulo they have cult status.

Explore the universe of multi talented Mauricio Takara, one of the key figures of Brazilian experimental music. Takara is presented on two tracks : one with his post-rock band Hurtmold (Sao Paulo’s answer to Tortoise) and one with Sao Paulo Underground, Takara’s teaming with legendary Chicago underground hero Rob Mazurek.

And what to say about Satanique Samba Trio? You guessed right : they inspired us for the title of this compilation. Neither a trio, nor a samba band, they serve us crazy satanic free jazz, with indeed all the traditional instruments of Samba!

More experiment is to be heard with LCD, an improvisional project formed by Nao Wave veteran Miguel Barrella and computer wizzard Paulo Beto (aka Anvil FX). LCD’s track is truly exclusive for this compilation, first time ever on CD! Do you need something more to prove that improvisation can produce a crazy dance track?

Miguel Barella is also featured with his former Nao Wave band Agentss. Highly influential during the eighties, although they only produced two singles! Think of Devo and early The Cure going to Sao Paulo.

Bossa Furiosa” (furious Bossa) is the title of Supla’s mixing of punk with Bossa Nova. Rumour goes that Beck heard this and was inspired for his Tropicalia record!

Mixing Samba with samples, electronics, and all sorts of crazy sounds are Loop B and Instituto. The first one is a computer veteran, with a track that would make Einstürzende Neubäuten rightly jealous. The second one is a collective of super talented producers, here remixing film music from legendary DJ Dolores.

This is the crazy satanic sound of Sao Paulo. A city that tourists in Brazil mostly avoid, for its noise, concrete and filth. But a city where the underground scene is blooming. CSS, Bonde do Rolê and Sao Paulo Underground were the first of this new generation to conquer clubs in the Old Continent. There is no predicting how many bands will follow!
